Youth arrested for posing as Maoist to extort Rs. 35 lakh from his father

A shocking case of deception within a family has surfaced in Odisha’s Kalahandi district, where a 24-year-old youth was arrested for attempting to extort Rs. 35 lakh from his own father by pretending to be a Maoist.

The victim, Dinesh Agrawal, a well-known contractor from Rupra Road under Narla police limits, found a threatening letter inside his car on October 6. Written in Hindi, the letter claimed to be from a Maoist group and warned that his entire family would be killed if he failed to pay Rs. 35 lakh. A similar extortion letter was also sent to his business partner, causing panic among both families.

Following the complaint filed at the Narla Police Station, an investigation was launched. During inquiry, police found inconsistencies in the letter — including incorrect Maoist names, spelling mistakes, and immature content — which raised suspicion that someone close to the family was behind the threat.

After detailed questioning and forensic examination, police discovered that the mastermind was Ankush Agrawal, Dinesh Agrawal’s 24-year-old son. Ankush had allegedly written the letter himself in an attempt to extort money from his father.

Confirming the arrest, Bhawanipatna Superintendent of Police Nagaraj Devarakonda said, “The letter clearly reflected amateur writing and lacked credibility. Further investigation revealed the son’s involvement, leading to his arrest.”

Police have registered a case and further inquiries are underway
